Hey everyone!!

I’ve been at camp for the last week, and honestly it’s been a blast (me starting this post a week ahead of time making confident predictions lol).

At camp, kids have written the randomest things all over the bottom of the top bunk, the tables in the cafeteria, and even a bit on the walls in the dorm. It’s mostly names and dates, but there’s a good amount of random ridiculousness (and a few phone numbers…). Some examples include:

  • It’s perfectly legal (2013 Jr-Sr)
  • Ya like jazz? and Ya like cheese?
  • Squiggly the Worm (accompanied by a stellar worm doodle)
  • You’re fine and dandy, eat some candy 🖤
  • The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell (btw, who writes science trivia on a cafeteria table at summer camp?? emphasis on SUMMER??)
  • Jellybean was here (this was written on the bottom of all the beds in one room, which is odd cuz Jellybean is a boy and why is he in the girls’ dorm???)
  • Girls rule boys drule drool (they couldn’t spell haha)
  • The ocean is a soup.
  • I’m watching you…
  • I was here with a sharpie
  • I’m a banana!
  • I’m a grenade!
  • No you’re not (these last three were written side by side on our table; the grouping amused me 😂)
  • Stay sparkley (accompanied by sparkle doodles but I can’t for some reason find any suitable emoji representations…)
  • Hey cutie!

Besides the plethora of names and dates, there’s a good amount of girls’ names plus boys’ names equal hearts forever and all that jazz, but I’ll spare you that. (actually by one of them someone else wrote “hope y’all broke up.” yikesss…)

There’s a sign on the wall of every room asking people to please not write on camp property (someone wrote on at least one of them, so that shows how much respect campers have for signs). What’s odd is that the counselors and that sign are in direct opposition: their tables in the cafeteria are just as graffitied as the camper tables. I don’t write on stuff, but I think it’s kinda fun anyway. I’ve compiled a list of the things I might write on beds and tables if I were the sort that was into that kind of thing.

  • *breaks slate over his head*
  • Lizzie + Darcy = 🖤 (or maybe Anne + Gilbert = 🖤…but that might be too much AoGG)
  • Am I really the only one who never gets any night mail?? (night mail is when the girls write notes to the boys before bed, and vice versa. It’s pretty dumb, but mail is important and no one ever writes me anything 😭😭😭)
  • the entirety of the poem All That is Gold Does Not Glitter, by J.R.R. Tolkien (any Lord of the Rings fans here??)
  • I’m a book dragon!! Rawr!!
  • God never intended for us to stay up this late, that’s why he turned out the lights for us (actual thought at midnight…we stayed up sooo late 😭)
  • Once upon a time…
  • “Moonbeam icecream…” = famous last words… (honest though, how is it possible to get two words on repeat in your brain??)
  • *doodle of a castle*
  • My name, ofc. If you’re going to write something on a table, might as well get the credit, am I right??
  • Chicken and noodles = 10/10 stars (my fave camp meal 😊)

Honestly most of these only make sense if you’ve been to camp or are a rather bookish individual (I actually left some of those bookish ones out. Enough is enough. Y’all get the picture). Hope you enjoyed this venture into the weirdness of my brain and a sneak peek of my favorite summer activity!!

Always,

Ava

  1. Fun ideas! With sparkles I like to use this emoji: ✨ I think it’s ✨perfect✨

  2. This is most amusing.
All That Is Gold Does Not Glitter is brilliant and beautiful and I want to write it on EVERYTHING!!!! (I made myself a bookmark with it on there but I didn’t give myself enough room and so it’s a little squished at the bottom!!)

    1. Glad you appreciated this humor. I wasn’t sure anyone else really got it…but whatever. This blog is supposed to be for me, not my twenty-whatever subscribers, right?? If I had fun, that’s enough.

I accidentally memorized All That Is Gold Does Not Glitter when it was in my literature book a few years back. I read it so many times that it stuck in my head. It’s so beautiful and hopeful and also definitive at the same time and argh Tolkien had such a way with words!!

      1. Right. This is a very good outlook. If people do not get such things it is not your problem. But some of us do!!!

I tend to memorize things like this for no particular reason, actually. (So I also have this memorized.)
There is this movie V for Vendetta, and in it the V character says this really long thing and almost every word is a V. And now I just know it. Which is fun because I can randomly say it and utterly bewilder everyone. 😆 Memorizing things is fun.

And yes, Tolkien was a most clever fellow. He has left us lesser authors to straggle along in his footsteps whilst staring up at him with awe and wondering how he did it.
